Nicolaas Jan Cupérus

Nicolaas Jan Cupérus (born November 20, 1842 in Antwerp , † July 14, 1928 there ) was a Belgian politician of the Liberal Party and a promoter of gymnastics .

Life

Cupérus was of Frisian origin . His father was a tea merchant in Antwerp. After attending the German Protestant School (1849) he went to the Royal Atheneum Antwerp (1854-1860), where he learned gymnastics from Isenbart. He initially favored the Swedish gymnastics after Pehr Henrik Ling and was from 1865-1877 the general secretary of the Royal Belgian Gymnastics Federation (1865) and from 1878 to 1923 its chairman. He was also the chairman of one of the oldest Belgian gymnastics clubs, the “Société royale de gymnastique et d'armes”. He was also involved in the Liberal Party, for which he sat on the Antwerp City Council from 1875 to 1894 and from 1903 to 1911. During the First World War he was in the Raad van Vlaanderen , from 1919 to 1921 he was senator for Antwerp. From 1917 until his death he was the director of the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp . In this capacity, he was involved in organizing the 1920 Olympic Games . He campaigned for equality between Flemish and French as the language of instruction at Ghent University. Cupérus was the head of the local Freemasons .
