Nicolas Birtz (born March 17, 1922 in Luxembourg - † March 22, 2006 ) was a Luxembourgish football player , politician and resistance fighter.

Career as a football player

Birtz's home club was Stade Dudelange. With this he moved into the final round of the German championship 1941/42 . There he was used in the qualifying round, but was eliminated from the eventual champions FC Schalke 04 .

On July 18, 1948, he was substituted on in the friendly match between the Luxembourg national football team and the French amateur national team (1: 4) in the second half. It was his only use in the national team.

In 1991, Birtz was instrumental in the merger of the Dudelange associations Alliance Dudelange , Stade Dudelange and US Dudelange to form F91 Dudelange , of which he was appointed honorary president.

Resistance during the German occupation of Luxembourg

During the time of the German occupation of Luxembourg , Birtz was a member of the Alweraje resistance group . From August 1942 to May 8, 1945 he was imprisoned in the SS special camp in Hinzert and in the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp .

Political career

In 1951 Birtz joined the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party . From May 21, 1973 to December 24, 1984 he was mayor of Dudelange. On February 14, 1985 Nicolas Birtz was appointed honorary mayor there.
