Nicolas Estgen

Nicolas Estgen (born February 28, 1930 in Dudelange ; † December 26, 2019 ) was a Luxembourg politician of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV), who was a member of the European Parliament between 1979 and 1994 .

Life

After attending school, Estgen studied psychology and philosophy at the Center Universitaire de Luxembourg and at the Sorbonne and graduated with a diploma. He then worked as a teacher and as the rector of the Alexis Heck hotel management school in Diekirch .

Later, Estgen, who was also chairman of the Movement for Family and Popular Action ( Action Familiale et Populaire ), began his political career in the CSV and was elected as its candidate for a member of the Chambre des Députés (Chamber of Deputies) . He was temporarily a member of the board and the presidium of the CSV and for a time chairman of the committee of the CSV for international relations and European affairs.

In 1979, Estgen was elected Member of the European Parliament and was a member of it for the first , second and third electoral periods until 1994. During this time he was Vice-President of the European Parliament from 1982 to 1984, and then Vice-Chairman of the Group of the European People's Party between 1984 and 1987 , before he was again Vice-President of the European Parliament from 1992 to 1994. In addition, he was temporarily a member of the extended Presidium of the European People's Party (EPP).

Estgen, who also worked as the editor of the family website of the daily newspaper Luxemburger Wort , was also Honorary Consul of Burundi and has received several awards for his political services. He received, among other things, the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the Order of the Oak Crown .
