Nicolas Siret

Nicolas Siret (born March 3, 1663 in Troyes , † June 22, 1754 ibid) was a French composer , organist and harpsichordist.

Live and act

Nicolas Siret came from a family of musicians who worked as band masters, organists and city musicians in Troyes for several generations and passed their skills and knowledge on to the family. Like his ancestors, Nicolas Siret was organist at Troyes Cathedral and several other churches in the city.

From the end of the 17th century Siret led the cathedral choir ( maîtrise ) and worked as an organ and harpsichord teacher. Around 1680 Siret met the Parisian organist and harpsichordist François Couperin , who significantly influenced Siret's style of composition.

Despite his musical success, he could not find a patron who would enable him to print his works. It was not until 1710 that Siret had his two surviving collections engraved at his own expense. The first collection consists of 2 suites and 8 harpsichord pieces. The only surviving copy of this print, which is dedicated to François Couperin, is in the Troyes media library. The second collection was created in 1719 and is in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. It contains 3 harpsichord suites and is dedicated to Jacques-Bénigne de Bossuet, a nephew of the Bishop of Troyes. This book contains one of the latest examples of a prelude non mesuré .

Siret married Marie-Françoise Bidelet, 30 years his junior, at the age of 54. He died in 1754 at the age of 91.

Long forgotten, the French Ministry of Culture and the Fondation Francis et Mica Salabert published a new edition of both collections in 2001.
