Nicolas Thomkins

Gustav Nicolas Thomkins (born July 27, 1953 in Ascona , Switzerland ) is a Swiss industrial designer who works primarily in the field of furniture / outdoor furniture for international companies.

After studying at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf in Erwin Heerich's class , he subsequently graduated from the Folkwang University in Essen , where he studied industrial design. While Thomkins was primarily specialized in industrial goods in the early stages of his career, since the late 1980s he has focused more and more on the areas of kitchens, indoor and outdoor furniture. In 1983 he moved to England where he opened his first design office in Maidenhead . At the end of the 1980s, first drafts for Gunther Lambert , concept and design for Küppersbusch , collaboration with Marcus Botsch and Studio Ambrozus in Cologne . In the early 1990s, design for Vitrashop and other collections for Gunther Lambert with the establishment of a joint sales company. In 1991 Thomkins founded the TBA Designersocietät in Essen with Botsch and Ambrozus , followed by further offices in Lucerne and Cologne. 1993 exclusive design work for Imperial , since 2003 chief designer of Dedon and since 2009 freelance work for Fendi Casa .

The development of the Tabeo cabinet system in 1989 for Lambert and the Yin-Yang Chaise Longe for Dedon are seen as important for his career . Thomkins has received numerous design awards, including the red dot design award 2007 ( Best of Best for Yin-Yang ).

Nicolas Thomkins is a son of the artists André Thomkins and Eva Thomkins .
