Nicolas Xavier de Ricard

Nicolas Xavier de Ricard (born July 12, 1726 in Aix-en-Provence , Bouches du Rhône , † May 30, 1812 in Paris ) was a brigadier general of the French Revolution .

Life

Ricard joined the military as an engineer in April 1744 and served in Flanders until 1748 when he was promoted to lieutenant. He took up service in the royal guard under François de Solas in 1757 and still served under François de Chevert until 1762. Then he was appointed major in the Regiment de Rothenburg by Richelieu and in December 1764 transferred to Guadeloupe as Lieutenant Colonel . There he served at Fort St. Louis from 1765 to 1768.

On September 21, 1788 he was promoted to field marshal and in 1793 became commandant of the island of St. Lucia . On February 4, 1794, he announced the decree to abolish slavery in the French West Indies . However, the British attacked and captured St. Lucia on April 4, 1794. De Ricard was forced to surrender and was captured. He was allowed to return to Le Havre on December 21, 1795 . He retired on January 27, 1804.
