Nicolas de Bonneville (born March 13, 1760 in Évreux , † November 9, 1828 in Paris ) was a French publicist and writer .

Life

Nicolas de Bonneville eagerly studied foreign literature in Paris and made a special contribution to imparting knowledge of German literature in France to Madame de Staël by performing German plays in the Nouveau théâtre allemand (12 vols., Paris 1782–85) translated, also edited a Choix de petits romans tirés de l'allemand (1786). He also helped Pierre Letourneur with the translation of Shakespeare's works ; he also transferred those from Thomas Paine , including De l'origine de la franc-maçonnerie (1812). In L'année 1789 ou les tribuns du peuple (1790) he delivered a parody of Racine's tragedy Esther .

During a stay in England in 1786, Bonneville, who was introduced to Freemasonry there, awoke an interest in politics, which was increased by the French Revolution that broke out soon afterwards . In 1790 he founded the Cercle social with the Abbé Fauchet and first published the Tribun du peuple , then from October 1790 to July 1791 the cosmopolitan Masonic newspaper La bouche de fer . He also became district president and as such is said to have initiated the formation of the National Guard. Despite all his liberalism, he spoke out against the violent measures of the rulers at the time, for example in his poésies (Paris 1793), in which he was not afraid to brand himself the September massacre. Because of his partisanship for the Girondins , he was imprisoned after their overthrow, but released again after the 9th Thermidor (July 27, 1794). After that he was one of the moderates, but was imprisoned again for a settlement between Napoleon I and Cromwell and part of his property was confiscated. Even after his release, he remained under police supervision for a long time. He died in great poverty on November 9, 1828 at the age of 68 in Paris.
