Nicolaus Jarre

Nicolaus Jarre (born November 19, 1603 in Hamburg ; † August 2, 1678 ibid) was a Hamburg mayor and lawyer.

Life

Jarre attended high school in his hometown and in 1622 went to law studies at the University of Wittenberg , the University of Marburg , the University of Tübingen , the University of Strasbourg and the University of Basel . In Basel he acquired the academic degree of a licentiate in law in 1631 , where he did his doctorate on the subject of "On manslaughter and its punishments". On further study trips that took him to Italy , France and England ; he returned to Hamburg.

There he was elected as a legal adviser as a representative of the Hamburg parliament. After he had administered the lower court in Hamburg for two years, he was elected councilor in 1639. From then on he worked for the Free Hanseatic City as a public representative, participated in the alliance agreement with Bremen in 1645 and thus created security for shipping on the North Sea, the Lower Elbe and the Weser. In 1648 he stayed at the coronation of Frederick III. of Denmark in Copenhagen and negotiated there in the interests of the city. In 1650 he was elected to the office of mayor , which was for 28 years, earned a high reputation in this function and appeared as a founder.
