The Nicolum River is a 13 km long left tributary of the Coquihalla River in the southern Canadian province of British Columbia . The river was renamed Nicolum Creek in 1942 . Since 1991 the river has had its original name again.
River course
The headwaters of the Nicolum River are in the Northern Cascade Range . Its origin is a mountain lake at 1700 m high on the northern slope of Mount Coulter ( 2006 m ). The Nicolum River initially flows 3.5 km northeast. Afterwards, 5 km north of Sunshine Valley , the river turns to the northwest. The British Columbia Highway 3 (Crowsnest Highway) follows km to the river for a distance of 8th The Nicolum River Provincial Park is about 2 km above the estuary. Shortly afterwards, the British Columbia Highway 5 (Coquihalla Highway) crosses the river. The confluence of the Nicolum River into the Coquihalla River is another kilometer downstream in Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park , 5 km east of the small town of Hope . In the south, the catchment area of the Nicolum River borders that of the Sumallo River , in whose valley the British Columbia Highway 3 (Crowsnest Highway) continues to the southeast.
Hydrology
The Nicolum River drains an area of about 110 km². The mean discharge 7 km above the mouth is about 2.6 m³ / s. The river usually carries the largest amounts of water between May and July.
