The Niederbayerischen Schotterwerke Rieger & Seil are a quarry company in Neustift , a district of the municipality of Ortenburg in the district of Passau .

Company history

The company was founded by the stone carver Georg Seil (1858–1918) in 1882 after he discovered an exposed granite deposit on the Wolfach . In 1908 the dairy owner Johann Rieger (1874–1955) took part in the company. Produced large paving stones and rubble for the House and bridge construction, with carts were transported. With the opening of the Wolfachtalbahn in January 1908, sales expanded to all of Germany, including for use as track ballast and road construction material.

The mechanization let the production quantities increase. During the two world wars , prisoners of war also had to work. At peak times, the company employed up to 400 people. Today the company has 64 employees. Up to 700,000 tons of granite are mined annually on five berms . The deepest mining area is 243 meters above sea level and represents the deepest open area in southern Bavaria .
