Neustift is a district of the Ortenburg market in the Bavarian district of Passau .

location

Neustift is located in the Wolfachtal about four kilometers north of Ortenburg, seven kilometers south of Vilshofen on the Danube and 20 km west of Passau .

history

Very little is known of Neustift's earlier history. It belonged to the Vilshofen collegiate monastery , in whose books it is mentioned in 1542 and 1597. In the year of conscription in 1752, Neustift is mentioned as part of the Hitzling chairmanship with five properties . Two single-shift subjects belonged to Hofmark Münchsdorf. Most of the time the farm was under the rule of the Ortenburg counts .

It was not until the beginning of the 19th century that Neustift grew out of scattered hamlets and farmsteads into an open village unit without a settlement center. Since 1882, when the Niederbayerischen Schotterwerke started to quarry granite, the number of inhabitants has grown steadily.

In the 1920s, numerous small settlers settled in Neustift. In 1922 the monastery of St. Scholastika Neustift was founded here by Benedictine Sisters of Adoration . The largest employer is the Niederbayerische Schotterwerke quarry with open-cast mining. The place is opened up for the rail freight traffic by the Wolfachtalbahn .

In 1926 residents of Neustift built a school building with a teacher's apartment at their own expense, especially the quarry owner Georg Seil. Because of the proximity of the ever-growing quarry, especially because of the danger of blasting, a new school building was built in 1963/1964. In the course of the school reform, the school was downgraded to a primary school in 1971.

Neustift was part of the municipality of Iglbach until the municipal reform in Bavaria , or from October 1, 1970 Wolfachau , before it was incorporated into the municipality of Ortenburg on May 1, 1978.
