The Niederburg , also called Unteres Haus auf der Brede , is a small castle ruin in East Westphalia in the Paderborn district . It stands in the valley of the Alme on the northern outskirts of the district of Brenken, which belongs to the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Büren .
The exact date of its construction is not known; possibly the Niederungsburg was built in the 11th century. It was the residence of a noble family who called themselves the Lords von und zu Brenken . At the beginning of the 16th century, the family built Erpernburg Castle north of the castle on a hill above the Almetal and moved their residence there. The castle as the original ancestral seat fell into disrepair before it was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War in 1622 .
Only the three-storey stump of a round tower and the gable wall of a residential building with two stacked chimneys have survived from the complex, which is situated in a field . The ruin , which is still privately owned today, is not managed and can only be viewed from a distance due to the risk of collapse .
The complex was entered under the name "Burgruine der Niederburg" under the serial number 3/6 on May 14, 1992 as a cultural monument in the list of monuments of the city of Büren.
