Niedergasser Gate

The Niedergässer Tor is a listed gate in Stolberg (Harz) in the municipality of Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

It is located at the southern end of Niedergasse at the southern entrance to the old town of Stolberg.

Architecture and history

The Niedergässer gate tower was originally located at this point, but it was demolished in 1824/27 in order to better handle stagecoach traffic. High, sandstone gateposts were built on both sides of the street , which still document the historical city limits. The posts are cautiously decorated with tracery in neo-Gothic style. Something similar can be found on the driveway to Stolberg Castle . Until 1875, the gate system in connection with a gatekeeper house was still important for the collection of an escort duty , which was then abolished.

In the local register of monuments , the gate system has been listed as a monument since March 5, 2002 under registration number 094 30488 . The gate system is considered to be culturally, artistically, historically and urbanistically significant.
