history

During an excavation under the parish church, bronze and iron finds from the early days of Christianity came to light. These were votive offerings from the 7th to 9th centuries. Umelsdorf was an early Christian place of worship, one of the earliest in the Kelheim district.

Umpalasdorf , the "village of Umbala" is first mentioned in 874. Hartwich, one of the 32 sons of Babo von Abensberg , built a castle here. From 1009 to 1027 he was Vogt of Weltenburg Abbey . This bailiwick stayed with the Lords of Umelsdorf for over a hundred years. Tensions between the monastery and its governor were not uncommon. In 1162 Babo von Umelsdorf donated 22 serfs to the monastery.

The first pastor in Niederumelsdorf is mentioned in 1225. From 1359 to 1382 the parish was incorporated into the Biburg Monastery . In 1592 the Jesuits and in 1786 the Maltese received the right of presentation over the parish. Due to the secularization in Bavaria , the church of St. Johannes Baptist and Evangelist in Oberumelsdorf had to be closed, as well as the Leodegar chapel, which stood in the meadow north of the parish church.

The first schoolhouse was built next to the church in 1861 and expanded in 1897. A new school building, named after Luitpold von Bayern , was built by the Umelsdorfers in 1907.

The municipality of Niederumelsdorf was incorporated into the Siegenburg market with the districts Grafenmühle, Holzleithen, Niederumelsdorf, Oberumelsdorf and Straßhaus as part of the regional reform in Bavaria on January 1, 1976. In 2002 Niederumelsdorf was recognized as the winner of the Kelheim district in the competition Our village should be more beautiful and received the silver medal at the Lower Bavaria level. To this day, Niederumelsdorf, with around 450 inhabitants, is a village characterized by the cultivation of hops .
