Nieu-Bethesda

Nieu-Bethesda ( English : New Bethesda ) is a small town in the municipality of Dr Beyers Naudé , Sarah Baartman District , Eastern Cape Province in South Africa . It is 40 kilometers from Graaff-Reinet . In 2011 the city had 1540 inhabitants; the urban area is 1.6 km wide and 3.2 km long.
The city was founded in 1875. It was named with reference to the biblical cistern Bethesda by the preacher Andrew Murray, who traveled with the trek Boers through the Karoo . Economically, the city lives mainly from cattle breeding. From around 2000, more and more artists have settled.
The place became known through the artists Helen Martins and Koos Malgas. Although Martins was White and Malgas was Colored , they lived together in Owl House , which later became a museum. The Kitching Fossil Exploration Center displays finds from the fossil collector James Kitching , who grew up nearby.
