features

The Nigerian barb is only 5 cm long and has an elongated body, a slightly underneath mouth and two pairs of relatively long barbels , the front half of which extends to the front half of the eyes, the rear sometimes to the rear of the eyes. The sideline is complete and runs below the dorsal fin in a downward curve. A thin, black or bluish longitudinal band extends from the rear edge of the gill cover to the rear edge of the caudal peduncle, where it sometimes widens. Below the dorsal fin it runs clearly separated from the sideline in an upward curve. Otherwise, the Nigerian barb is silvery with a brownish top and an almost white belly. The dorsal and caudal fins are pink. Females are stronger, males slimmer.

The Nigerian barbar lives in schools in flowing waters over muddy bottom.
