Non-session is a semi-documentary accompaniment of four skaters who drift through the Munich night.
Plot and background
Four boys drift through Munich at night on their skateboards for no particular reason. How so? Because they feel like it! Their names are Jonas, Tom, Sergio and Pacel. In one night they explore the big city on their skateboards - on the railings and ramps of interchangeable office supply stores and underground car park entrances as well as in the iconic locations, on Königsplatz or Maximilianstrasse. The camera follows the protagonists on their way to no destination, on their falls, on their foray through the mild summer night, while exploring their city. Somewhere along the way, an unexpected portrait of the city emerges. A feature film of a night, of a young attitude towards life. We own the city!
With NIGHTSESSION, director and producer Philipp Dettmer is returning to his own youth as a skateboarder and in this affair of the heart he brings some of the most promising young skateboarders in southern Germany in front of the camera. His film is a hybrid: a direct observational documentation of an attitude to life, as well as a fictionalized homage to a crazy night of his own youth. When the sun slowly rises again and Munich wakes up, our four boys spent a night that they will certainly not forget anytime soon.
criticism
“A night that never happened. A night that takes place every time the film is shown, as it was planned and experienced in its intensity, in its looseness, in its paradisiacal joy. "
"" Nevertheless, and this is a small cinematic miracle, the film 'Nightsession' develops a pull about four boys, all of whom are amateur actors who drift through Munich on their skateboards for a night. This is also communicated to viewers who have never seen the Life on a skateboard. ""
“For him, skateboarding is not just a sport, but also an attitude towards life. His experiment works. "
“The film lacks the balance between skating and its technical language, its tricks and evoking an attitude towards life. Skating predominates and becomes a bit of a number revue that steals its flow, its magic from the night (sic!) . "
