Nikephoros (Protosynkellos)
Nikephoros (Latin Nicephorus , Cyrillic Никифор; † 1597, Poland-Lithuania ) was a Greek Orthodox clergyman.
Life
Its origin is unknown. Nikephoros taught at the University of Padua and was a priest in Venice . He later became protosyncullos of the Patriarch of Constantinople .
In 1595 he was sent to Moldova . Konstanty Ostrogski , the voivode of Kiev, then invited him to come to Poland-Lithuania to support local Orthodox clergy in their efforts against a planned union with the Roman Catholic Church. On arrival he was initially arrested in Chotyń , but was able to travel on after Konstanty Ostrogski entered.
From October 6 to 9, 1596, he headed the assembly of Orthodox clergy in Brest , which spoke out against the simultaneous adoption of the Union of Brest . In 1597 he was arrested again as an alleged Ottoman spy in Poland-Lithuania and died in custody.
