Nikola Parov (* 1962 in Sofia ) is a Bulgarian multi-instrumentalist, folk and world musician.

Parov was introduced to the musical tradition of the Balkans by his grandfather as a child. At the age of six he learned to play the mandolin . Shortly after he moved to Budapest with his family at the age of ten, he received piano and cello lessons there. In 1982 he founded the group Zsaratnok , with which he recorded four successful albums by 1994. With the support of the Soros Foundation and the Budapest Academy of Sciences , he was able to study the history, culture and instruments of the music of the Balkans for several years .

In the 1980s, he learned by the songwriter Andy Irvine , the Irish folk music know. With him, as well as Davy Spillane and Bill Whelan , he presented Eastern European music on the album East Wind and on the accompanying tour. In 1993 Whelan brought him to the Riverdance Show . He toured with her for seven years as a multi-instrumentalist and soloist and appeared in three of her videos and the albums Riverdance and The Roots of Riverdance .

In 2000, at the invitation of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble and its artistic director, Ferenc Sebő , he created the music for the Naplegenda production , which combines dance and folk music traditions from different cultures of the Carpathian Basin (album of the same name). He also worked with Márta Sebestyén . In 2002 he founded his formation Balkan Syndicate (album of the same name in 2003), with which he moved to ethno-jazz .

He later performed with Andy Irvine's Mozaik project, among others . His own quartet (since 2005) includes the singer Agnes Herczku as well as Szlobodán Wertetics and Sándor Födő (album Volt nékem szeretõm / Once I Had a Sweetheart, 2006). He also plays instruments like nyckelharpa , gajda , bouzouki and kaval in duo performances with Herczku . His album Alomid was voted the best world music production in Hungary in 2011.
