Nikolai Grigoryevich Vasiliev ( Russian Николай Григорьевич Васильев ; born July 15 . Jul / July 28, 1908 greg. In Dwinsk ; † 25. March 1943 in Valdai ) was a Soviet lieutenant colonel and guerrilla commander in the Great Patriotic War and Hero of the Soviet Union .

Life

Vasilyev was born in Dvinsk as the son of an employee. He joined the Red Army and CPSU early on . Its location became Novgorod . He attended the political administration courses of the Leningrad Military District until 1936, and then became head of the House of the Red Army in Novgorod. After the German attack on the Soviet Union , he organized the partisan movement from July 1941 and from October 1941 commanded the 2nd Leningrad Partisan Brigade behind the German 16th Army . Under his leadership it was possible to liberate an area of ​​more than 11,000 km² and to set up a partisan circle ( Russian партизанский край ) that existed until September 1942. In addition to smaller raids, the 2nd partisan brigade under Vasiliev's command was involved in the largest single partisan action to date against the German base in Cholm in January 1942 (→ Battle of Cholm ). In addition, it brought much-needed food to enclosed Leningrad . Vasilyev later became a lieutenant colonel commissar in a regular battalion of the Red Army. He finally died after a long illness on March 25, 1943 in the hospital in Vyshni Volotschok .

Vasilyev was awarded two Orders of Lenin and the Order of the Great Patriotic War, First Class. On April 2, 1944, he was also posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union . His grave is in Valdai . While in the Soviet Union, the House of the Red Army in Novgorod, Vasilyev's former office, was renamed "Kulturhaus NG Wassiljew" . Today it is still the "N. G. Vasiliev Culture and Leisure Center" . On the occasion of his 100th birthday, a larger exhibition was devoted to Vasilyev in Novgorod.
