Nikolai Wladimirowitsch Tichonow ( Russian: Николай Владимирович Тихонов ; born May 23, 1982 in Novomoskowsk , Tula Oblast , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian cosmonaut who was nominated several times for a space flight, but never flew into space.

Activity as a cosmonaut

On October 11, 2006 he was selected as a candidate for the cosmonaut training center , and he completed his basic cosmonaut training on June 9, 2009 with distinction. Then he was in training for a long-term stay on the International Space Station . He was the substitute for Andrei Borissenko on the Soyuz MS-02 flight as flight engineer for the mission to the ISS.

Tikhonov was scheduled to be the flight engineer for ISS expeditions 51 and 52 in 2017. His mission was canceled by Roskosmos in order to achieve savings in ISS operations.

Tikhonov's mission as a flight engineer for expeditions 57 and 58 (2018/2019) was again canceled. The reason is said to have been further delays in the planned start of the Russian research module Naúka . Instead, he was assigned as a flight engineer for Expedition 63 from spring 2020. This mission was also canceled after Tikhonov injured his eye. Roscosmos hoped that he could fly to the ISS on Soyuz MS-17 instead in October 2020, but he did not receive any medical clearance for this mission either.

Due to new medical data, Tikhonov left the cosmonaut corps on July 31, 2020 without having flown into space.

Private

Nikolai Tikhonov is married and has two children.
