Nikolaus Benke

Nikolaus Benke (* 1954 in Vienna ) is an Austrian legal scholar . From 2000 to 2018 he was head of the Institute for Roman Law and Ancient Legal History of the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna.

Life

Nikolaus Benke was born in Vienna in 1954 . In 1978 he received his doctorate in law , in 1982 he was awarded a Master of Laws (LL.M) at King's College London and in 1989 his habilitation at the Faculty of Law at the University of Vienna , where he worked from 1993 until his retirement in 2019 Was a university professor and headed the Institute for Roman Law and Ancient Legal History from 2000 to 2018.

His main research interests in Roman law are private , constitutional and procedural law as well as legal sources . Other areas of specialization are Roman economic and social history as well as comparative law , in particular the dogma-historical comparison of common law with the continental European tradition.

In addition, Nikolaus Benke researches and publishes in the field of legal gender studies with a special focus on Roman antiquity.

From 2004 to 2011 Benke was a member of the Arbitration Commission (Section 43 University Act 2002) at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna .

Since 2013, Benke has been the deputy head of the Gender and Agency research association set up by the University of Vienna .
