Nikon F series autofocus

In addition to the single-digit F-series cameras , Nikon also built cameras with multi-digit numbers. Initially, relatively high hundreds numbers were assigned with a 1 in the ones place, (from 401) when the model was replaced in the 1990s, Nikon changed the numbering again, from this point onwards the tens numbers (from 50) were the nomenclature for this type of Nikon models. When the model was replaced again, the tens numbers were retained, only a 5 was placed in the units position (from 55). Only the F100 is a bit out of line here, as it belongs to the last series of cameras, but has been given a hundred.

The AF lenses with autofocus of the F series can only be focused manually with some digital camera housings that do not have a mechanical drive for the autofocus control on the F bayonet . These camera bodies can only communicate with the more modern lenses of the AF-S and AF-I series, which are equipped with their own focus motor.

It should be noted that Nikon has upgraded the hardware and software of some cameras. These versions are identified by a letter after the number (e.g .: F90X)

In general, the following applies to every series: the higher the number, the more valuable the camera. The F100, F90 and F801 are semi-professional models, while the F401, F50, F55, F60 and F65 are entry-level cameras. The cameras in between can be assigned to the amateur class.
