Nikos Kapetanidis ( Greek Νίκος Καπετανίδης ; * 1889 in Rize , † in September 1921 in Amasya ) was a Pontus Greek journalist and newspaper editor. He was one of the most famous personalities of the Pontos region and was killed by the Turkish nationalists.

Life

Kapetanidis was born in Rize in the Pontos region of the Ottoman Empire in Turkey . He attended the Phrontisterion of Trebizond ( Trapezous College ), a Greek middle school in the port city of Trabzon . He then became one of the most prominent journalists and active contributors to the local Greek-language press. Kapetanidis published his own newspaper Epochi (Season). He participated in educational matters and assisted in the Greek language question the Demotizismus in local schools. In addition, he insisted that education should not be controlled by the religious authorities, especially the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople .

Kapetanidis was executed in September 1921 in Amasya by the Turkish nationalists under Mustafa Kemal Pascha during the persecution of Greece in the Ottoman Empire 1914–1923 by the Independence Court. He was one of several figures from the local Greek community who were killed there.
