Nils Ingemarsson Linnæus , born Nicolaus Ingemarsson , (born July 1, 1674 in Jonsboda Östergård , Vittaryd parish ; † May 12, 1748 in Stenbrohult , Älmhult parish ) was a Swedish pastor and father of the scientist Carl von Linné .

Life

Nils Ingemarsson Linnæus was the son of the farmer Ingemar Bengtsson from Stegeryd near Vittaryd and Ingrid Ingemarsdotter. His mother was a sister of the pastor Sven Ingemarsson Tiliander from Pietteryd, who took Nils into his house and taught with his own children.

After attending school, he studied at Lund University . In order to enroll at the university, Nils Ingemarsson first had to get a family name. According to Swedish custom, he chose an object from nature. He named himself "Linn" (Småland dialect word for linden tree) after a three-stemmed linden tree near the house where he was born. The surname "Linnæus" emerged from this in Latinized .

After returning to his homeland in 1704, he first became a curate and lived in the house of pastor Samuel Brodersonius, whose wife Maria (Marna) Jörgensdotter-Schee had recently died. There he met his daughter Christina Brodersonia, an outstanding economist, who he married on March 6, 1706 and settled with her in Råshult . In 1706 he became Kaplan (Swedish Comminister ) of Stenbrohult and after the death of his father-in-law in 1708 his successor as pastor of Stenbrohult. In June 1709 the family moved from Råshult to Stenbrohult.

He held the position of pastor of the parish of Stenbrohult until his death. His son Samuel then took over the job.
