Pulteney studied the flora of Leicestershire and compiled a catalog of plants which was published in the Philosophical Transactions in 1757 . From 1760 on he wrote mostly botanical articles for Gentleman's Magazine . On November 25, 1762 he was accepted as a member of the Royal Society , in 1764 he earned his doctorate in medicine at the University of Edinburgh with a dissertation on the cinchona officinalis tree .

In the same year he was presented to William Pulteney, 1st Earl of Bath (1684–1764), who recognized him as a relative and for whom he should work as a doctor, which, however, prevented his death. Pulteney took a position as a doctor in 1765 at Blandford, Dorsetshire , where he remained for the rest of his life. He married when he was about 50.

In 1781 he wrote in A general view of the writings of Linnaeus about the life and writings of Carl von Linné . With the three-volume work Historical and biographical sketches of the progress of botany in England ... published in 1790 , he made a major contribution to the processing of the botanical history of Great Britain. In 1790 he became a member of the Linnaeus Society and in 1793 a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .

At the age of 71 years he died in 1801 of pneumonia . He left his collection of shells and minerals as well as his herbarium to the Linnaeus Society. His herbarium is now in the British Museum .
