Nina Jelisejewna Afanassjewa ( Russian: Нина Елисеевна Афанасьева ; born February 1, 1939 in Warsino ; pseudonym: ( Kildinsamisch ) Е̄льцэ Нӣна Афанасьева ) is a Sami politician and language activist from Murmansk.

Life

Nina Afanassjewa was born to Sami parents on February 29, 1939 in the village of Warsino . She grew up with Kildin Sami as her mother tongue .

In 1963 she completed her pedagogical studies at the Institute of the Peoples of the North in Leningrad and worked until 1983 as a teacher for Russian language and literature as well as for German in adult education in the cities of Apatity and Murmansk .

Nina Afanassjewa has been working on issues relating to the preservation and further development of the threatened Sami languages on the Kola Peninsula since 1980 . She is co-author of the first Kildin-Sami-Russian dictionary. It was published in 1985 under the editorship of Rimma Kurutsch . In addition to the dictionary, Nina Afanassjewa has participated as a co-author in the publication of a number of textbooks and textbooks for Kildin Sami as well as didactic materials. She is also the author of a Kildin-Sami-Russian phrasebook published in 2010.

Nina Afanassjewa has been a Sami politician and minority activist since the time of perestroika . She was instrumental in founding the Kolasami Association in 1998 and headed this NGO as president from 1990 to 2010.

In addition to Kildin Sami and Russian, Nina Afanassjewa is also fluent in North Sami and German. She is currently working on the publication of a dictionary on her native dialect, which linguists have so far barely documented. To this end, she has been working on the systematization of the known vocabulary for several years and, with the help of the few speakers who are still alive, collects new words and phrases as well as place names from the area where she was forcibly evacuated.

On November 23, 2012, Nina Afanassjewa and Alexandra Antonowa were awarded the Sami language prize Gollegiella ("Golden Language") during the session of the Norwegian Sami Parliament in Oslo . The award was ceremoniously presented to her on December 19 at the Norwegian Consulate General in Murmansk. The reason for the joint award of Afanassjewa and Antonowa was their leading role in the revitalization of the Kildinsamischen a. a. as a teacher, politician, writer and translator.
