history
Through his experience with the martial arts Karate , Judo and Jōdō , Shōji Nishio developed the Aikido Toho Iai around 1970. His master Ueshiba Morihei emphasized how important it was to train with the sword in order to better understand the movements of Aikido.
technology
Aikido Toho Iai is first performed by beginners with the bokken . Advanced students may also use a blunt Iaitō . The individual forms (katas) are practiced again and again individually. Particular attention should be paid to breathing, correct foot position and dynamics. There are fifteen different forms of Iai.
