Nito
Nito is a Maya ruin site in the mouth of the Río Dulce on the Gulf of Honduras in Guatemala .
history
Already in the late classical era, the Nito trading center was built a little west of today's Livingston . The Maya had a lively trade network across the rivers far inland and along the Caribbean coast around the Yucatán . The nearest trading center was Naco . At the time of the Conquista , the Acalán Maya, a subgroup of the Chontal Maya or the Putún Maya , dominated trade in this region. The brother of Prince Paxbolonacha from Itzamkanac controlled their settlement in Nito.
When Hernán Cortés founded the nearby town of La Natividad in 1524 , he settled the place with 20 Spaniards who had previously stayed in Nito and Naco. Today the town of San Gil de Buena Vista is located in the Nitos catchment area.
