Noailles is a district ( French : Quartier ) of the southern French city of Marseille in the Bouches-du-Rhône department . Noailles belongs to the 1st arrondissement (city district) and the canton of Marseille-Belsunce . In 2006 5819 people lived here.

The neighborhood is south of the famous Canebière street . At the Marché des Capucins there is a station of the Métro of Marseille (line 2). Noailles is traditionally a quarter of the "little people" ( quartier populaire ) and is now home to many immigrants from for example the Maghreb , the Comoros or Sub-Saharan Africa , especially in the area east of the Rue de Rome .

The Marché des Capucins

A nobleman from the Noailles family owned a town house here ( hôtel particulier ; house number 13). Today there is hardly anything left of it, only a small fountain and a balcony. Nevertheless, this gave the district its name. Urbanization began in Noailles in the 17th century . When Caterina de 'Medici , advocate of the Capuchins , visited Marseille in 1579, she decided to set up a Capuchin monastery. Towards the end of the 18th century, the monks owned a pharmacy, garden, sheet production and other facilities. Today only the church, consecrated in 1694, still exists. After the monastery was destroyed in the course of the French Revolution , a market was created that specialized in poultry and vegetables at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1839 a market hall was built, and in 1887 a union building was built here. In 1893 there was the first train connection.
