history

The old name of Noakhali city was Sudharam. Sudharam was named after Sudliaram Mazumdar , a wealthy merchant and benefactor. It was established as a parish in 1876 and the population in 1901 was 6,520. It was nothing more than a rural bazaar with a few government offices and residential buildings. It was completely destroyed by the cyclone of 1893, and the government offices that have been built since then are significant buildings. The town is connected to Laksam by rail , and steamers run from there to the islands and Barishal .

When the district headquarters was flooded by the erosion of the Meghna River in 1948 , it was relocated 8 km north to its current location in Maijdee.
