The Noble Discoverer was a drilling ship sailing under the flag of Liberia .
history
The ship was built in Japan as a bulk carrier and entered service in 1966 as the Matsuhiro Maru . In 1976 the ship was bought by Frontier Drilling and converted into the Frontier Discoverer drillship.
In 2010, the ship was renamed Noble Discoverer after the merger of Frontier Drilling and Noble Corporation . Until 2015 it was mainly used for drilling for the Shell Group in arctic waters.
The ship has long been called "rusty" and "obsolete" by environmentalists. A technical investigation by the US Coast Guard in 2013 revealed deficiencies. The ship also had problems with its propulsion system.
At the beginning of 2016 the ship was sold to India for scrapping.

The ship was 166 m long, 26 m wide and had a draft of 9 m. It was designed for water depths of up to 762 m and had a drilling capacity of up to a depth of 6,096 m.
The ship had a dynamic positioning (DP) system .
