Noel Michael Dwyer (born October 30, 1934 in Dublin , † December 27, 1992 in Wolverhampton ) was an Irish football goalkeeper . He came to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1957/58 championship season as a substitute for Malcolm Finlayson to five league appearances before he was the goalkeeper at Swansea Town in the early 1960s.

Athletic career

Born in the Irish capital, Dwyer was hired in August 1953 by Wolverhampton Wanderers from Ormeau , Northern Ireland . In more than five years with the "Wolves" the young goalkeeper was clearly behind competitors such as Bert Williams and Malcolm Finlayson in the pecking order and he completed his only five first division games in the championship season 1957/58 . He represented Finlayson for the first time on September 23, 1957 against Aston Villa (3-2) and his personal highlight was the 4-0 away win on the penultimate matchday against reigning champions Manchester United . Less than six months later, in December 1958, he moved to West Ham United , which had recently been promoted to the first division.

Dwyer made his debut for West Ham on 21 March 1959 against Bolton Wanderers (4: 3) and it was before kick-off of 43 competitive games within less than a year in 1960 for a fee of 3,000 pounds to the Welsh club Swansea Town issued has been. Until the mid-1960s, Dwyer was a fixture for Swansea, which was active in the English second division. In addition to 140 second division games, he played two games in the European Cup Winners' Cup against SC Motor Jena in October 1961 , which ended with the elimination. He was also part of the team that made it to the semi-finals of the FA Cup in 1964 and also prevailed against Liverpool FC at Anfield (Dwyer even saved a penalty). During this time he also completed fourteen full international matches for Ireland.

After 26 league games from January to October 1965 for Plymouth Argyle Dwyer moved to Charlton Athletic in December 1965 , where he let his career end. He passed away at the age of 58 after a long battle with cancer. He left a wife, son and three daughters, one of whom married England international Frank Worthington .
