Nomada sheppardana is a bee from the family of Apidae . There are authors who consider Nomada minuscula to be a dwarf form of Nomada sheppardana that has a different prey spectrum.

features

The bees have a body length of five to seven (females) or four to seven millimeters (males). The head and thorax of the females are black and drawn in red. The tergites are basal black and otherwise red. They have wide, shiny rear margins. The labrum is red and has teeth at the front and has shiny spaces between the point-like structures. The third antenna segment is the same length as the fourth. The last antenna segment is lighter than the rest of the segments. The visibly humped scutellum has two red spots. The rails ( tibia ) of the hind legs are blunt at the end and have, in addition to a long bristle hair, numerous small, sometimes superimposed, small thorns. The head and thorax of the males are black and only slightly yellow. The abdomen is black and has large yellow spots. The labrum varies from yellow to almost completely black and has shiny spaces between the points. The third antennae is shorter than the fourth. The label is black and has triangular yellow tabs on the sides. The thighs ( femora ) of the hind legs have a hair fringe at the bottom. The rails of the hind legs are blunt at the end and have one or two small thorns.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is common in southern and central Europe and in England. The animals fly in two generations from mid-March to late August. They parasitize Lasioglossum nitidiusculum and Lasioglossum sexstrigatum , presumably also other of the small Lasioglossum species.
