Nomi-no-Sukune ( Japanese 野 見 宿 禰 ) is a hero from Japanese mythology .

Mythical reports

In the Nihonshoki the Suinin - tennō was told of the brave man Taima-no-Kuehaya ( 当 麻 蹴 速 ), who, because of his outstanding strength, was looking for someone with whom he could measure his strength. The Tennō then wanted to know from his ministers whether Taima-no-Kuehaya was the greatest fighter in the empire or whether someone comparable could be found. One of the ministers came forward and reported on the equally brave Nomi-no-Sukune from the country of Izumo . On the same day the Tennō sent to Sukune, who came to the imperial court and immediately started the fight with Kuehaya on the seventh day of the seventh month in the seventh year of the rule of the Suinin-tennō. Sukune won the fight by kicking Kuehaya's ribs and loins, killing him. Nomi-no-Sukune got the lands of Taima-no-Kuehaya and stayed as a servant at the imperial court.

Also according to the Nihonshoki, after the death of Hibasu-hime no Mikoto, wife of Suinin-tennō, in the 32nd year of his reign, Nomi-no-Sukune proposed clay figures instead of human sacrifices as grave goods , whereby the pottery clans were also responsible for parts of the imperial burials . The Nihonshoki reports that these clay figures, which were used for the first time, were called Hani-wa ("clay rings") or Tate-mono ("set-up things").

Nomi-no-Sukune is still the patron saint of Sumōtori (sumo wrestlers). As this is it mainly in the mid- Meiji period established Shinto shrine (many venue near Tokyo Kokugi-kan honbasho worshiped). Other shrines are the Ō-nomi-no-sukune shrine in Tottori and the two Nomi shrines in Takatsuki .
