Norbert Elias Foundation

The Norbert Elias Foundation (Dutch: Norbert Elias Stichting; English: Norbert Elias Foundation) is a non-profit foundation established in 1983 by the sociologist Norbert Elias and based in Amsterdam . In line with the broad process and relationship-based understanding of Norbert Elias, she is committed to promoting process-sociological social sciences.

Since its inception, all income from the publication of Elias' works has been allocated to the foundation's capital. With the death of Elias on August 1, 1990, the foundation became the sole heir.

The board consists of Johan Goudsblom , Hermann Korte and Stephen Mennell .

Publications

The foundation published the collected writings of Elias in German and English. Since Elias wrote in both German and English, the editions contain for the first time all writings published to date in both languages.

The German edition comprises 19 volumes that were published by Suhrkamp Verlag between 1997 and 2010 . The edition includes the books and articles published during his lifetime as well as a large number of previously unknown writings that were edited or translated here for the first time. All previously published texts have been reviewed and corrected. Each volume contains a detailed register and an editorial note.

The English edition comprises 18 volumes that were published by UCD Press (University College Dublin Press) between 2006 and 2014.

In addition, many publications by Elias have been translated into other languages.

Research network process sociology

The foundation supports and promotes the worldwide interdisciplinary network of scientists who research on the basis of process and figuration sociology.

Blog process sociology

The foundation operates a blog on its website with current information on interdisciplinary research in the sociology of processes, in particular on the announcement of conferences.

Newsletter figurations

The foundation has published the Figurations newsletter twice a year since 1994 . It contains the latest news and reports on all aspects of interdisciplinary process-sociological research. All editions are also available online.

Conferences

The foundation organizes worldwide conferences on interdisciplinary process sociological research.

Norbert Elias Scholarship

The foundation awards grants for further research into the unpublished manuscripts from the estate of Norbert Elias in the German Literature Archive (DLA) in Marbach am Neckar .

Online journal Human Figurations

Since 2012, the foundation has sponsored the new online journal Human Figurations , which is dedicated to researching long-term development processes in human societies. It is published by Katie Liston ( University of Ulster ).
