Hermann Anders Korte (born March 28, 1937 in Münster ) is a German sociologist .

Life

Korte was trained as a social worker from 1958 to 1963, after which he studied sociology, economics and socio-ethnology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . After graduating in 1967, he became an assistant to Helmut Schelsky , then initially an employee in the development of administration and construction planning for the emerging Bielefeld University . In 1969 he became a research associate at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research(ZiF) from Bielefeld University (until 1974). 1970 PhD: "Multifunctional urban development and political public". From 1970 to 1972 Korte worked on various urban development projects and reports, his appointment to the Advisory Board for Spatial Planning for the duration of the 7th legislative period of the German Bundestag took place in 1973. From 1973 to 1974 he was responsible for the preparation and management of the study group “ Social planning ”at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research at Bielefeld University.

From 1974 Korte taught sociology at the Ruhr University in Bochum with a focus on “ urban and regional sociology ”. During his time in Bochum, in particular, he coordinated empirical research projects on migration issues; close collaboration with Hartmut Esser and Hans-Dieter Schwind (criminologist). In 1994 Korte became a full professor for sociology at the University of Hamburg and retired there in 2000.

Korte was a member of the board of the Norbert Elias Foundation in Amsterdam from 1983 to 2016 . He was a member of the German Society for Sociology , from which he left in 2015. He has been a member of the PEN Center Germany since 1995 , on whose board he has been treasurer from 2004 to 2011 and since 2018.

plant

Korte has three research and teaching areas that he focuses on:

Since his time in Bochum, in particular, he has worked in '' urban and regional sociology '' and in " migration research ", in Hamburg he devoted himself to "general sociology". The results of research and teaching are reflected in numerous publications.

In addition, he devoted himself intensively to the work of Norbert Elias , with whom he was on friendly terms and played a major role in making Elias and his work in Germany known. He then continued this during his time in Hamburg. Numerous influential works on general sociology were also created here.

Korte largely agrees with Elias when he breaks with the “long-cherished idea that there is 'society' and next to it the 'independent individual'. On the one hand, this stands in sharp contrast to the Frankfurt School ( critical theory ), which adheres to the autonomy of the individual, and, on the other hand, affirms Durkheim's theses (the individual as a product of society, social fact ). ”But Korte also sees Elias as someone who Hope to intervene in the course of history in a changing way, does not give up.

The relationship between “social statics” and “social dynamics” occupied him throughout his life. These terms, borrowed from Auguste Comte , stand for him on the one hand for the social constraints (rule, subordination, tradition etc. = social statics) on the other hand for the individual striving for happiness, spiritual development and reason (= social dynamics). He tried to investigate the latter in the question of how sociologists can contribute to societies enabling peaceful coexistence in the long term.

Korte's work also extends to the renewal of universities in Germany; in an essay for “DIE ZEIT” in 1995 he called for a “permanent renewal process” at the universities. He continued this commitment in his offices as prorector, dean and institute director.

method

Korte represented a "narrative sociology" (" narratology " in English, or " narratologie " in French - see narrative theory ) standing in the humanities tradition , combined with skepticism towards the results of empirical social research . Methodologically, he was particularly influenced by Norbert Elias and Hans Paul Bahrdt . Max Weber found a lot of space in his representations.
