Norbert Makowski (2009)

Norbert Makowski (born November 18, 1932 in Berlin ; † August 18, 2016 in Rostock ) was a German crop scientist and author and, thanks to his extensive public relations work, is one of the best-known East German agricultural scientists. Even after reunification, he was able to successfully continue his research and transition activities throughout Germany and in Eastern Europe.

Life

Makowski completed an agricultural apprenticeship and, after graduating from high school, studied agriculture with a specialization in agricultural chemistry at the Rostock University . After completing his studies (1957), he worked for 10 years at the Institute for Arable and Crop Production at the University of Rostock. He received his doctorate in 1964 and completed his habilitation six years later. In 1970 he took on a managerial position within the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the GDR and in 1979 was appointed professor for crop science. 1990 Award of the Facultas Docendi by the University of Rostock. After reunification he worked until his retirement in 1997 as head of the research center for renewable raw materials and horticulture and deputy director of the institute for arable and crop production in the newly founded state research institute for agriculture and fisheries Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. After his retirement he worked at the Institute for Energy and Environmental Technology in Munich, as an external scientist at the State Research Center for Agriculture and Fisheries Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, as a consultant in Eastern Europe and as a columnist for the farmers' newspaper.

Teaching and Research

Makowski was a lecturer for field testing and biostatistics at the Agricultural Faculty of the University of Rostock for 22 years. He has also given guest lectures in Berlin, Halle, Stettin, Prague, Minsk, Poltava and Florence. Makowski accompanied numerous diploma theses, 42 dissertations and 6 habilitations.

Research achievements to be highlighted:

  • Production of brewing barley in the Baltic Sea coast area
  • Creation of a mathematical model for the yield structure of the grain
  • Production of baking wheat on diluvial soils
  • Development of the production processes for winter rape and winter rye
  • Introduction of winter rapeseed cultivation in regions east of the Bug (Belarus, Ukraine)
  • Optimization of the cultivation of alternative oil fruits (crambe, camelina)
  • Decontamination of polluted soils in the Chernobyl zone
  • Revitalization of mixed crop cultivation in organic farming in Bavaria and Austria
  • Creation of conditions for organic farming in Romania
  • Cultivation of "lost crops" on dry sandy soils
  • Measures to preserve the endangered rough-wooled Pomeranian sheep

Makowski reports on the results of his research work and their application in over 1,600 scientific, popular science and agricultural journalistic publications. He is the author and co-author of 13 manuals and textbooks in Germany and Eastern Europe. His public relations work includes around 700 lectures that he gave between Toronto and Moscow, both at international congresses and in the hall of a village pitcher.

  • 2006: Honorary doctorate from the oldest Russian agricultural university in Gorky, now the Belarusian State Agricultural Academy in Gorky
  • 2008: Honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Rostock
