Norbert Mitzel (born July 14, 1966 in Augsburg ) is a German chemist and professor of inorganic chemistry and structural chemistry .

Life

Norbert Werner Mitzel studied chemistry from 1985 to 1991 at the Technical University of Munich and passed his diploma exam in 1991. In 1993 he did his doctorate with Hubert Schmidbaur on "Volatile Silylamines, Hydrazines and Hydroxylamines". He worked with David WH Rankin at the University of Edinburgh for two years . He completed his habilitation in 2000 at the Technical University of Munich . In 2001 he was appointed to the Technical University of Berlin , followed by an appointment to the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster in 2002 and, in 2007, an appointment to the University of Bielefeld for a chair in inorganic and structural chemistry .

He is the author of more than 300 scientific articles. He is a preparative inorganic chemist , mainly active in the field of main group chemistry. He dealt with the preparative chemistry of the element silicon (volatile hydridosilanes, silicon as Lewis acid, hypercoordinated compounds), the element nitrogen (hydrazines and hydroxylamines), the element phosphorus ( ylides , phosphoranes ), the elements aluminum , gallium and Indium ( Lewis acid chemistry), the early transition metals and the lanthanoids .

Norbert Mitzel is also a structural chemist . He is particularly dedicated to clarifying the structure of small molecules in different phases. He runs one of the few laboratories in the world in which gas- phase structures are elucidated using gas-phase electron diffraction . Solid structures of substances that are liquid or gaseous at room temperature are examined using in-situ crystallization and X-ray diffraction , structures in solution using various methods of NMR spectroscopy .
