Modern times and infrastructure
An island council, the Eutan Tarawa Council (ETC), is responsible for local matters . North Tarawa sends three members of parliament to the Maneaba ni Maungatabu parliament in South Tarawa , and Nabuti Mwemwenikarawa , Boutu Bateriki and Inatio Tanentoa were elected to the 10th parliament 2011–2015 .
The largest structures are the church buildings, the traditional local meeting houses, the maneabas , and the Immaculate Heart College and JSS College schools . North Tarawa has ten elementary schools, a three-year middle school Eutan Tarawaieta Junior Secondary School (JSS), and in Taborio a high school Immaculate Heart College (Senior High School).
The land route is complicated by numerous canals between the lagoon and the ocean. Many of them can be crossed on foot at low tide. There are dams between several islands, plus a bridge between Abaokoro and Marenanuka and the important connecting bridge to South Tarawa between Buota and Tanaea. Speedboat ferries run from Betio across the lagoon to Buariki and Buota.
