NordVPN is a VPN - providers , the desktop applications for Windows , macOS and Linux , mobile apps for Android , iOS and a Android TV offers application.

NordVPN can also be set up on WiFi routers and NAS devices as well as other platforms. NordVPN is headquartered in Panama , where the company is not legally required to share customer data with the authorities, as Panama is not part of the Five-Eyes or Fourteen-Eyes agreements .

history

According to the NordVPN website, the company was founded in 2012 by "four childhood friends". At the end of May 2016, NordVPN presented an Android app, and an iOS app was added later in the same year . In October 2017, a browser extension for Google Chrome was released , which was followed by an app for Android TV in June 2018 . At that time, NordVPN was already running more than 4,000 servers in 62 countries.

In 2017 particularly strict were the purpose of circumventing countries blocking the so-called veiled Server ( English obfuscated server pictured) of NordVPN. These servers allow the user to access the service from countries such as Iran , Saudi Arabia and China , which operates the Golden Shield project .

In March 2019, NordVPN was allegedly asked by Russian authorities to join a state registry that contains a number of the websites that have been blocked by the government. This would prevent local internet users from circumventing the Russian censorship system . The Russian authorities have given the provider 30 days to meet the requirements, otherwise it would have to expect a complete ban in Russia . NordVPN refused to comply with these demands and shut down all of its Russian servers on April 1st. As a result, NordVPN continues to operate in Russia, but with no available Russian servers.

In September 2019, NordVPN announced the new service NordVPN Teams , which is suitable for small and medium-sized companies as well as remote teams and freelancers by enabling them to securely access their work data.

On October 21, 2019, an unknown security researcher posted an incident on Twitter during which private keys from NordVPN were allegedly leaked. In response, NordVPN confirmed that one of its Finnish servers was compromised in March 2018. The incident was caused by a weak point in the data center's remote administration system that affected a Finnish server between January 31 and March 20, 2018. The data center only informed the VPN provider about this on April 13, 2019, and the provider immediately terminated the contract with the data center and removed the affected server. NordVPN has been criticized for not immediately disclosing the incident, but the provider said it had to conduct a thorough internal review before NordVPN discloses the violation. On October 29, 2019, the provider announced additional audits and a bug bounty program , which should ensure more transparency and security.

Functions

With NordVPN, users' Internet traffic is routed through a remote server, which hides their IP address and replaces it with the IP address of the remote server. Depending on the protocol, the data between the customer and the VPN server is encrypted . NordVPN uses standardized applications such as OpenVPN and Internet Key Exchange v2 / IPsec for encryption . In addition, proxy services are offered, also unencrypted. In addition to general VPN servers, NordVPN also offers servers for specific purposes such as P2P file sharing , double encryption, and connection to the Tor network .

The provider used to use L2TP / IPSec and PPTP connections for routers, which were discontinued later because they were outdated and insecure.

In addition to the desktop applications for Microsoft Windows , macOS and Linux and mobile apps for Android and iOS , as well as the Android TV application, NordVPN users also have browser extensions for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox .

In November 2018, NordVPN claimed that its no-logs policy had been audited and verified by an audit firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers AG.

NordLynx was released in July 2019. This VPN is based on Wire Guard , which aims at better performance than that of IPsec - and OpenVPN - network protocols . NordLynx is available to Linux users and, according to tests conducted by Wired UK , the protocol can "provide a speed boost of hundreds of MB / s" under certain circumstances.

In a review by PC Magazine in February 2019, NordVPN was praised for its strong security measures and for "a tremendous number of servers", but was also described as expensive. CNET's review in March 2019 gave NordVPN high marks for the dedicated IP option as well as the ability to use a single account with six devices. According to Tom's Guide's October 15, 2019 report, NordVPN is a robust and reliable VPN provider despite some quirks. Techradar recommended NordVPN to bypass government internet censorship systems, including the Great Firewall of China .
