Nordkalk is the leading producer of lime products in Northern Europe and has over 30 locations in eight countries. The headquarters of Nordkalk Corporation is located in Pargas ( Finland ). In Germany, Nordkalk has a branch in Lübeck .
history
Limestone was already mined in Pargas in the 17th century, possibly even in the 14th century. Industrial dismantling began on November 26, 1898, when the Pargas Kalk Aktiebolag company was founded by Otto Moberg. The Pargas Kalk Aktiebolag called itself Partek in 1978 . Nordkalk Corporation continued mining and processing limestone in 1991 as an independent company. Until 2003 Nordkalk was part of the Partek company. Since 2010, the Rettig Group has owned 100% of the shares in Nordkalk.
Products
The important product segments of Nordkalk are:
- Limestone products ( calcium carbonate or calcite )
- Quicklime ( calcium oxide ) and slaked lime ( calcium hydroxide )
- Raw materials for paper pigment products (calcite for GCC and quicklime for PCC).
Nordkalk also sells dolomite and wollastonite .
Limestone-based products are used in industry (including paper, building materials and steel), agriculture and environmental protection.
Nature and environmental protection
In the Swedish forest area of Ojnareskogen on Northern Gotland , Nordkalk is planning to build a plant for lime mining and to drill tunnels over 200 m deep. The area should be declared a national park before it is sold. Due to a small change in the law by the Reinfeldt government , the Nordkalk company was allowed to mine lime in the area. Local residents and conservationists feared that the limestone mining would endanger the water supply for the people of Gotland and Fårö .
After protests by the Swedish nature conservation youth Fältbiologerna and other organizations, 70 police officers were relocated to the forest.
