North Sea Expedition Pommerania describes two German scientific excursions with the ship SM Avisodampfer Pommerania under the command of Kapitänleutnant Hoffmann in 1871 and 1872.
The expeditions took place in Kiel under the direction of the Commission for Scientific Research into the German Seas . In the spring of 1870 the Ministry of Agricultural Affairs set up a commission for the scientific investigation of the German seas and appointed Karl August Möbius as the representative of zoology . In this capacity he took part with Victor Hensen , Paul Wilhelm Magnus and other researchers in the exploratory voyages undertaken with the SM Avisodampfer Pommerania in 1871 through most of the Baltic Sea, the Kattegat and Skagerrak and in 1872 through the North Sea.
