Salvelinus neocomensis (native common names : Jaunet or Biblet ) is an extinct freshwater fish species from the genus of the char ( Salvelinus ) within the salmon fish family. It was endemic to Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland.

features

Salvelinus neocomensis reached a standard length of 150 mm. He possessed 21 to 23 gill trap rays. The height at the beginning of the anus was 13 to 16 percent of the standard length. The eye diameter was 1 to 1.5 times the distance between the eye sockets and made up 24 to 25 percent of the head length. The muzzle was blunt, the mouth stood under. The lower jaw was enclosed by the upper jaw. The flanks were yellowish, the fins lacking the white edges of the other species of char. The pectoral fin reached in the male to the anus.

Way of life

Salvelinus neocomensis occurred at a depth of 70 to 80 m. The diet consisted of insect larvae, snails, shellfish and fish eggs. Spawning took place on the muddy bottom of Lake Neuchâtel.

status

Salvelinus neocomensis was declared extinct by the IUCN in 2008 . The species is known from only three specimens collected in 1896, 1902 and 1904. Extensive searches in the 1950s and 2003 remained inconclusive.

Systematics

Salvelinus neocomensis was first described in 1903 by Otto Fuhrmann as Salvelinus salvelinus var. Profundus . Since the binomials Salvelinus profundus in 1901 by Alfred Schillinger for the deep Arctic char was awarded Jörg Freyhof and wrote Maurice Kottelat in 2005 a new description of the species as Salvelinus Neocomensis .
