The Northwest Island is an island-like group of small and remote mountains in Queen Maud Land, East Antarctica . They form the northern foothills of the Alexander von Humboldt Mountains in the Wohlthat massif .
They were discovered and named descriptively during the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 under the direction of polar researcher Alfred Ritscher .
