Norihiko Fukuda

Norihiko Fukuda ( Japanese 福田 紀 彦 , Fukuda Norihiko ; born April 20, 1972 in the city of Kawasaki , Kanagawa Prefecture ) is a Japanese politician and mayor of the city of Kawasaki since 2013.

Fukuda attended Nagasawa Municipal Elementary and Middle School in Kawasaki and Macintosh Public High School near Atlanta . He studied political science at Furman University in South Carolina . He then worked, among other things, as secretary of the then Democratic lower house deputy Shigefumi Matsuzawa - also from Kawasaki. In the parliamentary elections in Kanagawa 2003 Fukuda ran in the two - mandate constituency Miyamae-ku (a district of Kawasaki) for the Democratic Party and was elected with the second highest percentage of votes. In 2007 he was re-elected.

In 2009 Fukuda resigned as a MP and ran for mayoral election in Kawasaki against incumbent Takao Abe . His candidacy was supported by the Democratic Party, he was defeated Abe with 145,688 to 117,456 votes. After that he was again among other things secretary for Shigefumi Matsuzawa, now governor of Kanagawa, as well as visiting researcher at manifesuto kenkyūjo ("Elective Research Institute") of Waseda University .

In the mayoral election in 2013, incumbent Abe retired after three terms; his successor, with the support of the three largest established parties, was to be Yukio Hideshima, the previous head of the city's finance department. Fukuda ran again, this time supported by Matsuzawa, who now represents for the Minna no Tō Kanagawa in the House of Lords. Fukuda prevailed with around 3,000 votes ahead of Hideshima. He succeeded Takao Abe on November 19, 2013.
