Norman Lowrey

Norman Eugene Lowrey (* 1944 ) is an American composer, action artist and music teacher.

Norman Lowrey studied at the Eastman School of Music and is a composition student of Pauline Oliveros . He is Professor of Music and Head of the Music Department at Drew University in Madison.

With funding from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation , he and Cynthia Poten initiated the River Sounding project in 1994 , in which artists created works under the impression of the sounds and silence of the Delaware River . The project included painters Doug and July Alderfer-Abbot , composer David Dunn , visual artists Alan Gussow and Nura Petrov, and poet and filmmaker Cecilia Vicuna .

Lowrey was best known for his singing masks, masks made of wood and ceramic, into which flutes, rattles and other musical instruments are integrated, so that each mask has its own voice. They were u. a. Exhibited at the New Jersey State Museum . Performances with the masks found u. a. at Plan B in Santa Fe, at Lincoln Center in New York and at The Deep Listening Space in Kingston / New York.
