Athletic career

At the age of nine, Norman Schubert came from the Altenhain sports community to join the children's team at the Leipzig Chemical Company Sports Association (BSG) . As a junior he played for local rivals 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig and in 1976 was appointed to the GDR junior national team. With her he played six international matches between 1976 and 1977, in which he was used as a middle player.

For the 1977/78 season Schubert returned to Chemie Leipzig, where he first played with the 2nd team in the third-class Leipzig district league . 1978/79 he was taken over by the 1st team that was represented in the second-rate GDR league . The 1.80 m tall Schubert played 17 games out of 22 games and scored two goals. As a season winner, BSG Chemie successfully participated in the league promotion round, in which Schubert was involved with three of eight games and two more goals. At first it seemed as if Schubert could win a regular place in the team with the use of the first eight league games of the 1979/80 league season, but then he was no longer called up in the league team. Usually called up as a midfielder, he only scored one goal in the point games. Chemie Leipzig had to relegate from the league again at the end of the season. In the 1980/81 season Schubert was not reported for the GDR league team and was not used. In 1981/82 he returned with 19 GDR league games and three goals. In the promotion season 1982/83 Schubert was only marginally involved in the return to the league with six point games and one goal and two games in the promotion round. In his second league season he was only used in five league games in 1983/84 in the first half of the season because he injured himself so badly on matchday 7 that he could only be called up again in the second half of the season. There he completed twelve league games and so came this season to 17 league stakes, in which he was regularly used in midfield.

In 1984/85 Chemie Leipzig also planned with Schubert in the league, but he only played a friendly game in October 1984. In addition, he played with the 2nd team again in the district league. After BSG Chemie was relegated again, they named Schubert again for their GDR league squad in 1985/86, but he again only played one friendly game. In November 1985 he was called up for six months on reserve service with the National People's Army .

After his release in April 1986, Schubert joined the GDR league team Chemie Böhlen , where he played five point games by the summer. In the two following seasons he was only used in the 2nd team at Chemie Böhlen, which also played in the Leipzig district league. Only in 1988/89 Schubert came in the GDR league team to six league stakes.

In the 1989/90 season Schubert returned to Chemie Leipzig, where they still played in the GDR league. There he appeared five times as a substitute between the 20th and 27th matchday. After Chemie Leipzig merged with Chemie Böhlen to form FC Sachsen Leipzig in the 1990/91 season and had received a league place through Bohlen’s promotion, Schubert was no longer scheduled for the first team for this season and instead played in the junior league . A return to higher-class football was not achieved by Schubert.
