Norman John "Dutch" Speck (born July 30, 1886 in Canton , Ohio , USA ; † November 18, 1952 , ibid) was an American American football player . He played in the National Football League (NFL) on the offensive line , including the Canton Bulldogs .
Player career
Dutch Speck worked as a steel worker before he started football. From 1910 he played in various football teams in the Ohio League, a semi-professional American football league from his home state of Ohio . He celebrated his greatest successes with the Canton Bulldogs, a football team from his hometown. With the Bulldogs he won the Ohio League championship three times. After the American Professional Football Association (APFA) was founded, the league was renamed the National Football League in 1922, and the Canton Bulldogs became a founding member of the league in 1920. The team's coach was Jim Thorpe who used bacon in the team's offensive line. Thorpe was replaced in 1921 by Cap Edwards , who in turn had to give way after the Guy Chamberlin season .
In addition to Chamberlin, Pete Henry and Link Lyman played on the team , who were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame after their careers . Bacon became undefeated NFL champions with his team in 1922. The Bulldogs were again unbeaten during the season the following year and Speck won his second NFL title. After the season he moved to the Akron Pros , but ran for this team only in one game. In 1925 he returned to the Bulldogs. After an unsuccessful season under Pete Henry, who had meanwhile taken over the coaching office with the team from Canton , he ended his career there in 1926.
Dutch Speck is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Canton.
