William Roy "Link" Lyman (born November 30, 1898 in Table Rock , Nebraska , † December 16, 1972 in Baker , California ) was an American American football player who played mainly on the position of the offensive tackles . He played eleven years for various franchises in the National Football League (NFL) and won four league titles (1922, 1923, 1924 and 1933).

Despite his height of 188 cm and a weight of 115 kg, Lyman was a very agile and fast player who was also used as a ball carrier in the offense . However, he was known for his varied and constantly changing game as a defensive lineman , the modern defense game with constantly changing structure in defense is attributed to his style of play.

college

Lyman only started playing American football at the University of Nebraska . There was no football team in his high school as there were only seven boys in his school. For the "Huskers" he played in 1918, 1919 and 1921. In 1920 he had to sit out to earn money to continue his studies, but in 1921 he was the star of the team that only lost one game against Notre Dame .

NFL

In 1922, the player-coach of the Canton Bulldogs , Guy Chamberlin , also from Nebraska, brought him to the NFL in Canton. With the Bulldogs, Lyman won two championships in a row in 1922 and 1923 before the team was sold to the owners of the Cleveland Indians in 1924 . In 1924 he played, like most of the top performers of the Canton Bulldogs, which had since been dissolved, for the renamed Cleveland Bulldogs and won the third championship title in a row.

The following season he played half for the re-established Canton Bulldogs and the Frankford Yellow Jackets to switch to the 1926 season for the Chicago Bears , for which he played until his career in 1934 with two one-year breaks. In 1929 he played semi-professional football for an independent team and in 1932 he sidelined due to financial problems.

In 1933 he won his fourth championship with Chicago and ended his career in 1934 with a division championship.

Honors

Lyman was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1964 and the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 1972.
